How to Install Lightroom Presets on Your Phone (Step by Step)

Most preset packs assume you already know how to install them. Then people buy, get stuck, and ask for a refund. Here’s the whole process, including the parts that usually go wrong.

What you’re actually installing

A Lightroom preset is a .xmp file — a small text file listing slider positions. Exposure +0.3, highlights −40, and so on. It doesn’t contain image data. It’s a recipe, not a filter.

That matters because a preset is a starting point. On your photo, in your light, it will need adjustment. Anyone promising one-click perfection on every image is lying.

iPhone / iPad

• Download the zip on your phone. Safari saves it to Files → Downloads.

• Tap the zip once — iOS unzips it into a folder automatically.

• Open Lightroom Mobile (the free version works).

• Open any photo → tap Presets → tap the three dots top right → Import Presets.

• Navigate to the unzipped folder and select the .xmp files. You can select many at once.

They’ll appear as a new preset group.

Android

Same idea. Unzip with your file manager, then Lightroom → Presets → three dots → Import Presets → select the files.

Desktop, if you’d rather

Lightroom Classic: File → Import Develop Profiles and Presets, select the zip directly — no unzipping needed. Presets sync to your mobile app automatically if you’re signed into the same Adobe account.

When they don’t show up

“Import Presets” is greyed out — you need a photo open first. Lightroom won’t let you import presets from the library view.

You imported the zip instead of the files — mobile Lightroom needs the individual .xmp files, not the archive. Unzip first.

Nothing appears after importing — force-quit Lightroom and reopen. Mobile occasionally doesn’t refresh the panel.

They import but look wrong — this is usually exposure. A preset built for a correctly-exposed shot applied to something two stops under will look muddy. Fix exposure first.

Get the most out of them

Apply the preset, then adjust exposure and white balance for your specific shot. That’s not a failure of the preset — that’s how professional editing works. The preset does the twenty tedious decisions; you do the two that depend on the photo.
